I did not read 50 Shades of Grey and I will probably never read 50 Shades of Grey. It just doesn’t sound like my cup of tea.

But yesterday I started reading Mary Gordon’s Spending for my Queens University seminar on “The Joy of Writing Sex.”

If you want to read sexy prose, you should be reading this book.

Here’s a quote from a review:

Mary Gordon’s newest book, Spending, is a romance novel for smart people. It’s erotic, funny, and provides all the pleasures of a good bodice-ripper with a key distinction: the female love interest is a fully realized character. She’s got brains, depth, even angst.

And here’s the best part…the protagonist, painter Monica Szabo is FIFTY YEARS OLD! How wonderful is that? So go trade your books about 50-sides-of-a-weird-lover for a fully realized, three dimensional 50 year-old feminist protagonist.

You’ll thank me for it.

My friend Soniah recently wrote a beautiful post about the horrific assault on Malala Yousafzai. Soniah is originally from Pakistan, and understands better than most, the layers of complexities involved in an innocent child just trying to get an education. Please read her important post.

  1. The greatest writer of sex – Anais Nin. As deplorable as some of her stories are, the words and how they are put together are quite beautiful. Her story is interesting. Why read a poor imitation of the real thing?

  2. thank you Anjali. I appreciate your shout -out. I think it interesting that the Taliban shooting a fourteen year old is in the same post as writing about sex– oddly fitting in so far as the Taliban display not just gender hatred but probably have deep rooted issues with women as sexual beings– yes I am going to go out on a limb and say this ‘the Taliban– each and every one of them– cannot accept women as sexual being let alone smart individuals’

  3. Exactly! These sorts of fundamentalists consider education synonymous to sexual promiscuity (however absurdly defined). When will it ever get better for these girls?
