This mid-August, I’ll be a part-time empty-nester. My 4 year-old will be starting full day pre-K at the same public elementary school my other girls attend. I’ll have nearly 7 hours a day, free and unemcumbered to WRITE WRITE WRITE DO YOGA WRITE. With all this upcoming time on my hands, though, it’s time for me to go back to school.
I’ve spent most of my waking hours since returning from Europe researching (again) low residency MFA programs. I’ve got a handful of programs I think are a good fit, but one clear first choice.
What I’ve decided to do, is apply to my top choice program for the term that starts in January. If I get in, I’ll start 6 months earlier than I’d planned. If not, I’ll re-apply to my first choice program in the spring, along with several others, and start next summer.
So yes, I’m definitely moving forward with going back to school. While I’m applying, I’ll continue my agent search for novel #1, and write novel #2.
Starting school seems like the perfect way to finish my thirties.
