I wrote a novel.

We interrupt tales from the India trip (the last installment will be tomorrow) to bring this public service announcement.

Last night I finished the first draft of my first novel– The Secrets of the Sari Chest. It’s 243 pages, 77,451 words. It took me 7 months to write and I finished it just in the nick of time– the screen on my laptop keeps blacking out. It’s time for a big time tune up.

Next week I’m delving into on-location research (road trip!) and beginning an outline of what I’ve already written to make sure I’ve got an intriguing plot, important subplots, only relevant characters, scenes that push the plot forward, and a style of story telling that compels the reader to keep reading. After that? It’s time for major revisions and draft #2.

It’s a lot of work, but 7 months ago I’d never even written fiction before. And now I’ve got a novel.

I did it.

  1. Thank you, Elaine. I credit your own devotion to your craft (or crafts plural..let’s see there’s acting, singing, quilting, scrapbooking, etc.) as inspiration!

  2. Congratulations! Huge huge huge achievement. Lots of people think they have a novel in them. You got yours out! (or I should say: your first.) Woohoo!

  3. Can’t WAIT to read it. You’ve been teasing me for SEVEN months. πŸ™‚

Congratulations, Anjali Sr.! What an accomplishment!!!!!

  4. Thank you for your encouragement! Well, I’ve got months of revisions ahead of me! First things first!
