Reinvention

It’s a scary thing, pulling out the resume for the first time in years. First, I had to find it. What computer was it on? Was it on the old, broken down laptop? Was it on the old, broken down desktop? Did it have a file name that made any kind of sense, so that I could locate it quickly? Or did I name it something stupid, like whenpigsfly.doc, causing me endless hours of scrolling past it?

Luckily, for once I chose a file name that made sense– “resume2003.” Did you catch the number at the end of the file name? “2003” doesn’t stand for what number draft it was — it’s the year. Meaning, I haven’t updated my resume since 2003.

If there is any moment in your life where you finally comes to terms with the fact that you are not doing what you should be doing — it’s that moment where you revise your resume. I chopped off entire accomplishments that I was once so proud off — all to make room for my more relevant publication history.

It’s a small start to getting somewhere, but at least it is a start.

Have a great weekend.

  1. I dug up my resume the other day. It was a pdf. I shrugged and saved it again, so it would “look” new. But I’ve had the same job for 14 years, so not much has changed…
